The claim
According to a TIME magazine cover, Volodymyr Zelensky wants to remove the Z and V from his name.
Our conclusion
The cover is a fake that was apparently first distributed on a channel in the Signal app.
The cover of a current issue of TIME magazine is circulating and is believed to be real by a surprising number of people: Apparently Volodymyr Selenskyj, English spelling: Volodymyr Zelensky, wants to delete the Z and the V from his name.
But the magazine cover is fake.
The fake
The letters Z and V can often be seen on Russian military vehicles, which was initially surprising since both letters do not exist in the Cyrillic alphabet. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Z stands for “za pobedoy” (за победу), in German: “For Victory” and the V stands for “sila v pravde” (Сила в правде), in German: “Strength in Truth”.
Since these letters symbolize the Russian invasion through their use on military vehicles, Zelensky no longer wants to use them in his name:
There is also laughter about the fact that Zelenskyj's head is positioned on the TIME cover in such a way that the M behind it looks like two horns, which reinforces the narrative of the pro-Putin faction in their opinion that Zelenskyj is the actual "devil" and was a warmonger.
Of course it's a fake!
The Cyrillic spelling of Volodymyr Zelenskyj is Володимир Зеленський. The Z and the V do not exist in the Cyrillic alphabet, but the letter В in the first name is pronounced (since “Fladimir” does not exist as a name, depending on the language it becomes “Wladimir or “Vladimir”) ) and the З in the last name is pronounced like an S or a soft Z (which is why we write the last name with S, but the English spelling is with Z, which is pronounced softly in the English language).
In the English spelling of the name and the underlying spellings used by the Russians, Z and V occur, and in the Cyrillic spelling of the sayings the В and the З also appear, so it would make a certain sense if Zelenskyj would delete the В and З from his name - which is still a fake!
The cover of the upcoming April/May issue of TIME magazine is known (see HERE ): It doesn't show Selenskyj, but the Japanese baseball player Shohei Ohtani , along with the sentence "It's Sho-time". It is also noticeable that in the bottom right of the fake cover there is a reference to a signal channel on which the fake was possibly first distributed.
Conclusion
The widespread cover of TIME magazine is a fake that apparently originated on a Signal channel. The real cover of the upcoming issue is known and can be seen directly on the TIME website. Nevertheless, there are a surprising number of users on Facebook and Twitter who believe the cover to be real without much concern.
