Once a year, Time magazine names the Person of the Year, formerly called “Man of the Year.”

And since it is generally quite an honor to appear on the cover of a respected magazine with such a title, one also expects great personalities who have done admirable things. In 2019, Greta Thunberg became Person of the Year , but in 1938, Adolf Hitler became Person of the Year.

Some users may not believe that the claim is true, which explains why we received several inquiries about that sharepic:

Hitler and Thunberg: People of the Year
Hitler and Thunberg: People of the Year

The direct comparison is also made on the sharepic without seeming to be in any way explanatory:

“Time magazine, which named Greta Thunberg “Person of the Year 2019,” once named Adolf Hitler “Person of the Year 1938.”

, what the Facebook page “ Politics Facts ” writes on the Sharepic is a fact However, this direct comparison opens the door to completely wrong conclusions, because users only come to one of the following conclusions through this comparison:

  • Greta Thunberg is as bad as Adolf Hitler
  • Adolf Hitler was actually as good as Greta Thunberg
  • Time magazine has no idea or is corruptible

What exactly is the “Person of the Year”?

Since Charles Lindbergh was named the first Man of the Year in 1927, there have now been 93 covers of Time magazine. In the magazine itself there was always a detailed description of this person, but who was by no means always a “heroine” or “hero”.

Some examples:

  • 2016 Donald Trump, subtitle: “President of the divided States of America”
  • 2007: Vladimir Putin
  • 2004: George W Bush
  • 1979: Ayatollah Khomeini
  • 1972: President Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger
  • 1939 and 1942: Joseph Stalin

As you can see from this small selection, the people were not chosen because of their popularity, but because they had a major influence on world events !

However, the 1938 issue of Time has a special feature, because for the first time the chosen person, namely Adolf Hitler, was not shown in large size on the cover, but like this:

Image source: time.com , cover credit: RUDOLPH C. VON RIPPER

A tiny Adolf Hitler sits with his back to the reader in front of a huge organ, subtitle: " From the unholy organist, a hymn of hate ," murdered victims hanging on a wheel above the organ.

The article about Adolf Hitler in the magazine wasn't exactly a eulogy for the dictator. It was created shortly after the Third Reich captured Austria and what was then Czechoslovakia, almost exactly eight months before Hitler fully ignited the Second World War with his invasion of Poland.

The founder of Time, Henry Luce, also made it clear that the award is for people who influence world events for better or for worse !

Conclusion

The sharepic compares Greta Thunberg to Adolf Hitler and associates that both people are equally good or bad according to Time magazine. However, the magazine's title simply shows the people who had the greatest influence on world events at the time, either in a good or bad sense.
