Did you know that Santa Claus (!) is a German tradition that destroys “Penny” with the Zipfelmensch?
No? Neither do we, since in many places it is actually the Christ child who brings the presents at Christmas, while Santa Claus was more popular as a gift bringer in the USA for a long time. And now “Penny” is also campaigning against homophobia in football with the hollow chocolate body. Scandal!

From Zipfelmann to Zipfelmensch

In addition to the usual Santa Clauses, there has also been a Zipfelmann at “Penny” since 2013, as the company confirmed to us in an email in 2015 . That was also the year in which people first became upset about him:

Before you ask: No, we don't know why a Zipfelmann should be Islamic either. “Penny” also made it clear that the Zipfelmann was not replacing Santa Claus, but was simply being offered as an extension to the range:

Nevertheless, people get excited about the Zipfelmann every year. In 2021 a little more, as the Zipfelmann shed his binary gender role and became the Zipfelmensch .

" Now he's taking off his coat and saying goodbye to his binary gender role - we want everyone to be able to identify with the little cult figure. ❤️

The result is: A Zipfelmensch for everyone. Our Zipfelmensch continues to stand for tolerance and peaceful coexistence, no matter what gender you identify with, who you love or what festivals you celebrate. 🥰 The Zipfelmenschen are like us. Different and yet the same in one thing.

By the way, our colleague Beate won one of the 100 Zipfelmensch figures and even proudly showed it to us in our editorial meeting!

The Zipfelmensch plays on Team Love

This year the Zipfelmensch appears in rainbow colors and is taking a stand against homophobia in football:

Fortunately, the haters have slowly given up and the reactions are almost entirely positive... almost:

By the way, Jesus probably wouldn't roll over in his grave. According to the Bible he rose again, remember? 😉

There is also a detailed press release from the Rewe Group (see HERE ):

“With this year's edition of the Zipfelmensch, PENNY is taking a stand against homophobia in football as well as in other sports. Under the motto “Join Team Love”, the hollow chocolate figure will be available in all 2,150 PENNY stores from October 31st for 1.49 euros. PENNY will donate 0.20 euros of the sales proceeds to the Magnus Hirschfeld Federal Foundation for the project: “ Football for Diversity .”

Conclusion

For years we have been asked again and again whether the Zipfelmann (since 2021 Zipfelmensch) is a fake or whether he even replaces St. Nicholas or Santa Claus.

This year we can finally breathe a sigh of relief due to the almost entirely positive reactions and the great acceptance of this hollow chocolate body: After all these years, most people have noticed that it is not a fake and that Santa Claus or St. Nicholas will not be abolished as a result.

At least that should be the end of it for now. Now we are already “looking forward” to the first claims that the Berlin Christmas market would “now” be called the winter market and that the St. Martin parades have been renamed. Something happens all time. 😉
