Tips about heating: What you can easily do yourself and when it's worth hiring a craftsman.

OIL HEATING: EVER HIGHER HEATING COSTS

The Bossert family's dream of living in their own house came true last year. But since Jasmin and Steven Bossert moved in, the heating costs have risen massively. A big burden for the family, because they now have to reckon with around 1,000 euros more in heating costs per year.

CORRECT INSULATION: EXCESS HEAT IN MANY BASEMENTS AND BOILER ROOMS

Energy consultant Jonas Pischner takes a closer look at the oil heating system. Insulation is often a problem: This can be seen in the high excess heat in many cellars and boiler rooms. The savings potential when subsequently insulating pipes is up to 80% compared to the energy loss of uninsulated pipes, explains Pischner. But everything looks good for the Boschert family.

OIL HEATERS: A FLAT HEATING CURVE SAVES 25% HEATING ENERGY

Another sticking point could be the boiler. The required heating output usually depends on the outside temperature - the warmer it is outside, the less the heating has to provide. Jonas Pischner can adjust this with the so-called heating curve. Up to 25% heating energy can be saved with a flatter heating curve. Also useful: a precise setting of the night time reduction. This seems to be exactly the problem for the Bossert family: a temperature of 20 degrees is too high.

FROM THERMOSTAT TO TURNING DOWN THE HEATING: TRICKS TO SAVE HEATING ENERGY IN YOUR APARTMENT

But energy consultant Jonas Pischner knows that there is potential for savings not only in the heating system in the basement, but also in the Bossert family's apartment. First, Pischner vents the heater. This is easy to do with a standard key from the hardware store. Another simple tip: For example, when you get home and it's cool, don't turn the heating up completely, but only to the level that corresponds to the desired temperature. It's best to turn down the heating when you're away. Jonas Pischner also recommends digital thermostats. These allow you to adjust the room temperature more precisely than with simple thermostats and are available for around 15 euros.
