But there are also a few things to consider when heating with wood.

The Thuringia Consumer Center gives tips on how to use stoves and fireplaces correctly. Every fireplace must be inspected by a chimney sweep. This has not yet happened with tens of thousands of ovens.

“This means an increased risk of fires and smoke poisoning. The test must be carried out urgently,” advises Ramona Ballod, energy consultant at the Thuringia Consumer Center.

According to the emission control regulations, only well-dried pieces of wood can be burned in the oven. Newspapers, on the other hand, belong in the waste paper, yoghurt cups in the yellow bag.

“Old window frames and chipboard are hazardous waste and should be disposed of in the landfill, but under no circumstances in the private oven or fireplace,” warns Ramona Ballod.

Freshly produced logs must dry in well-ventilated areas for at least one to two years before they are ready for the kiln. Beforehand, they burn more poorly, produce less usable heat and release a lot of environmental pollutants during combustion. “The tree that was felled at the beginning of the year has no place in the oven next winter,” says the expert.

Really cheer on

If you want to use an oven, you should find out more about how to light it correctly in advance. This includes: Carefully layered wood, smaller log cross-sections for quick burning, lighting from above with wax-soaked wood wool, burning as undisturbed as possible, no adding logs. The supply of combustion air is also important and reducing the exhaust gas cross-section in a timely manner keeps more heat in the house.

The Federal Environment Agency offers further information in its brochure “Heating with Wood” or from the Chimney Sweeps Association .

Particulate matter problem

Ovens produce significant amounts of soot, pollutants and particulate matter. In many places they are more problematic than road traffic. If they are operated, it should be as environmentally friendly as possible. If you still want to buy a new oven, you should leave the workshop oven and all-purpose burner at the hardware store and instead choose a model that meets the criteria of the “Blue Angel” environmental label.

“These models are significantly more expensive, but they do have a dust and fine dust filter, among other things. They also have automatic air control, taking a complicated task away from you to ensure optimal operation,” says Ballod.
