Our Watchlist Internet will show you how to pay securely when shopping online and which payment methods could be subject to a chargeback.

What payment options are there?

  • Purchase on account: You only pay when you have received the goods and keep the product. The invoice amount is transferred directly to the online shop.
  • Klarna – purchase on account: Do not confuse “Klarna – purchase on account” with “purchase on account”. If you choose Klarna, you do not pay the purchase amount to the online shop, but to Klarna. This means you have two contacts – the online shop and Klarna.
  • SEPA direct debit: You provide the online shop with your bank details during the ordering process and allow the online shop to debit money from your account.
  • Credit card: You enter your credit card details during the payment process and allow the online shop to charge your credit card.
  • PayPal: You can only use PayPal once you have created an account. This account must then be linked to your credit card or bank account or topped up with any amount. If you pay with PayPal, PayPal transfers the payment to the online shop.
  • Cash on delivery: You pay for the goods directly upon delivery in cash or by card.
  • Instant transfer / eps transfer: You select your bank when paying and will be automatically redirected to your online banking. You don't have to enter payment details, just approve the payment. The money will then be transferred directly to the online shop.
  • Advance payment: You receive the payment details from the online shop and transfer the money directly to their account. The goods will only be shipped after receipt of payment.
  • Apple Pay/Google Pay: If you have stored your credit card or debit card for Apple Pay or Google Pay, you can pay without entering your details.
  • Bitcoins: To pay with cryptocurrencies you need a “Bitcoin wallet”. The purchase amount is then transferred to the Bitcoin receiving address of the online shop.
  • Westernunion/Moneygram: Do not use Westernunion or Moneygram when shopping online. With these payment services, cash is deposited in the respective branch and sent to recipients in another country. Only use this service for people you know well!

You are on the safe side by purchasing on account

If possible, select “purchase on account”. Then you only pay when you have the product in your hands and you are satisfied with it.

Even with “Klarna – purchase on account” you theoretically only pay after delivery. However, if there are problems with delivery (e.g. defective goods, missing or late delivery), Klarna will request a transfer after the payment deadline has expired, even if you have not yet received the goods or have not received them in perfect condition. If payment is not made, reminder fees will be charged quickly and debt collection letters will be sent. Klarna takes a very aggressive approach. Our tip: If you have any problems, inform Klarna in good time and also report returns to Klarna.

When you pay with “Klarna – purchase on account” you do not pay to the online shop, but to Klarna. You therefore have two contractual partners: Klarna and the online shop. Since these parties do not always communicate seamlessly with each other, problems and unjustified reminders can arise with returns, complaints or delivery delays. You can read more about this in the article “ What can I do if I have problems with Klarna?

Avoid immediate transfer and advance payment

Please remember that payment in advance or immediate transfer is final. A chargeback is not possible or only possible in individual cases (e.g. if the transfer was not made long ago).

Danger! Advance payment is a popular means of payment, especially for fake shops. Only use it if you are absolutely sure that the shop is trustworthy!

Choose payment methods with chargeback options

Some payment methods allow a chargeback under certain circumstances:

  • SEPA direct debit: Payment can be retrieved without restriction within 8 weeks. You can read more about this at the Internet Ombudsman's Office .
  • Credit card payment: Chargebacks are possible under certain conditions. If you have not authorized a payment or unexpected amounts are charged, you are entitled to a refund. Basically, we always recommend contacting the credit card company and clarifying your individual case. But remember: If you have approved the payment, the credit card company does not have to refund you the money. You can then only hope for goodwill. You can read more about your rights to repayments for credit card payments at the Internet Ombudsman .
  • PayPal: PayPal offers buyer protection. If you do not receive any goods or receive defective goods, you have a chance of getting your money back with a PayPal payment.

Spoiled for choice: Which payment method should I choose?

  • When shopping online, ensure there is a balance between different payment options.
  • It's better to order somewhere else if you only have one payment option.
  • It is best to choose “purchase on account” or a payment method with good chargeback options such as PayPal, credit card payment or SEPA direct debit.
  • Remember: Fake shops often offer a selection of different payment options - including payment services such as PayPal, credit card payment or Klarna!
  • Check online shops very carefully! Here are tips on how to check online stores .
