Yesterday morning, the police registered another three fraud attempts using the “shock calls” scam. Luckily, none of these calls were successful.
An unknown caller identified himself as a police officer
Telephone scammers first contacted a resident of Witzenhausen on Wednesday morning around 11:35 a.m. An unknown caller posed as a police officer to the woman. During the conversation, he claimed that a friend of the victim, whom the caller also named, had run over another person. However, since the victim knew that the friend in question did not have a driver's license, she immediately hung up and did not allow herself to be drawn into another conversation. Nevertheless, as a precaution, the woman contacted the named friend, but the facts then turned out to be completely fabricated.
Woman pretended to be the victim's daughter
Just 10 minutes later, telephone scammers tried to dupe an 81-year-old pensioner from Hessisch Lichtenau with a similar story. A woman spoke up in a tearful voice, pretended to be the victim's daughter and said she had killed someone. When the senior had the presence of mind to ask the daughter's name, the unknown caller hung up, so that no harmful event occurred in this case either.
Alleged daughter had an accident
Fraudsters also tried the same scam on a 65-year-old woman from Meißner on Wednesday afternoon. First, a supposed police officer came forward with the story that the 65-year-old's daughter had been in an accident that resulted in the death of a woman. As a result, a woman took over the conversation and tried to pretend to be her daughter.
The daughter's imprisonment could only be averted with a bail amount of 40,000 euros. The fraudsters tried to further increase the pressure on the woman by having another person pose as a public prosecutor and threaten to have her daughter imprisoned if the money was not obtained quickly. However, since the woman stated that she could not fulfill the demands for personal reasons, the fraudsters ultimately gave up. The victim then contacted her real daughter, where the call turned out to be a scam.
Italian country code – +0039…
In the latter case, the officers from the Specialized Commissariat for Fraud Crime also report that the victim was contacted via phone numbers with an Italian country code (+0039…). In general, in this type of fraud it often happens that the victims are called from foreign telephone lines.
Tips for the “shock call” scam
- Be suspicious if people on the phone pretend to be relatives or acquaintances who you do not recognize as such. Ask the caller things that only the right relative/acquaintance can know.
- Do not reveal details about your family and financial circumstances.
- Don't let a caller push you or put you under pressure. Make an appointment for the next day at the earliest and check the information.
- Get the phone number from the caller and check it against numbers you already know.
- Call the person in question at the number you know and confirm the situation.
- After a call with financial demands, check with family members.
- In this context, it should be noted that neither the police nor the public prosecutor's office calls parents/relatives in the event of accidents and demands large sums of money for a deposit. This is a scam.
- , inform the police immediately : call the emergency number 110 and report it to the police.
