Titanium dioxide can be found in foods as a white dye or in glazes. Since August 8, 2022, titanium dioxide has no longer been allowed to be used in food throughout the EU, but products can still be sold in stores until the best-before date has expired. However, in a random sample, the consumer advice center found 35 products containing titanium dioxide.
Titanium dioxide in food has been banned throughout the EU because a genetically damaging and carcinogenic effect cannot be ruled out. Some products containing titanium dioxide have a long shelf life and may be sold until their best before date has passed. Titanium dioxide gives products such as glazes or sugar pearls a white shine. It was also used to color foods such as marshmallows or mayonnaise.
In a sample in mid-August in supermarkets, discounters and drugstores, the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Center took a closer look and examined dietary supplements, sweets, light ready-made sauces, mozzarella and cake decorations - all products in which titanium dioxide had previously been used.
Individual products still contained titanium dioxide and their best-before date had not yet expired. The additive was most commonly found in dietary supplements, but cake decorations, chewing gum and lollipops with titanium dioxide in the ingredient list were also still on the shelves. The experts no longer found the controversial additive in products with a short best-before date, such as mozzarella.
Tip from the consumer advice center: If you want to avoid titanium dioxide completely, you should take a look at the list of ingredients. Products with the ingredient “titanium dioxide” or “E171” should no longer end up in your shopping cart.
