Various media are currently reporting on the mysterious death of dogs, which is now said to have reached Germany after the outbreak in Norway.
Deadly dog disease from Norway now also in Germany: These reports unsettle dog owners, who in turn come to us and want to know whether this is true. In particular, it concerns the reports from RTL and FOCUS .
Our fact check on this topic was carried out veterinary practice Anke Meeuw
Veterinary practice Anke Meeuw: I spoke to the treating veterinary practice, Katharina Wiener, on the phone. At this point I would like to sincerely thank my colleague who reacted very well, calmly and prudently to this case and duly reported the incidents to the authorities.
After some dogs in Norway died in August and September 2019 from a dog disease that has not yet been clarified, worrying reports are now coming from northern Germany. Apparently three dogs in Boizenburg (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) died of this disease.
The three dogs initially suffered from watery and ultimately bloody diarrhea and died within 24 hours.
However, all three animals were physically weak and had previous damage (chronically ill), so severe diarrhea is significantly more dangerous here.

In a fecal sample from a deceased dog, a germ was found that was also found in some (not all) animals in Norway: Providencia alcalifaciens. This germ sometimes appears in fecal samples, but is usually not fatal.
have currently been detected in dogs autopsied Clostridium perfringens and Providencia alcalifaciens. Both pathogens can lead to gastrointestinal diseases, but can also be found in healthy dogs. One therefore speaks of facultative pathogens that can cause an illness, but usually do not. Two of the animals that died came from a multi-dog farm. This germ was not found in the other dogs.
To date, no dog has undergone a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death. However, in the event of further deaths, the authority can arrange for an autopsy of the affected animals.
Dog disease: So far we here in Germany have the same findings as our colleagues in Norway:
- Diarrhea, bloody at the end
- no single germ can be identified as the cause
- Dog-to-dog transmission has not yet been detected
- Providencia alcalifaciens was found in some dogs in Norway and in one dog here in Germany
- other causes are not yet known
In summary, one cannot speak of an “outbreak” of the same dog disease here. In order to prove that the Providencia bacteria are related, one would have to genetically compare the germ found in Boizenburg with the germs from Norway.
So far it appears to be a severe diarrheal illness of unknown cause, which can quickly lead to death, at least in damaged and chronically ill animals. The Norwegian authorities also have no further information regarding the August and September cases.
Scaremongering is not appropriate!
However, scaremongering and great fear are not appropriate, as experience shows that diarrheal illnesses increase in the fall and transmission from dog to dog does not appear to occur.

dubious reports online from a veterinarian from Germany who allegedly cured dogs in Norway with chlorine dioxide. After consultation with the Norwegian authorities, there was no cooperation, nor is this bleaching agent approved as a medication for animals and its use is highly relevant to animal welfare law.
