An 82-year-old senior woman and her daughter fell victim to fraudsters who posed as police officers and tricked them into believing that their granddaughter was involved in a fatal traffic accident. As a result, the fraudsters stole a total of 26,000 euros. Be careful of such scams!

Bail for traffic accident

The 82-year-old's daughter, who was visiting her mother, took the call. She was led to believe that her daughter had caused a serious fatal traffic accident and that bail payments were now necessary.

Five-figure amount handed over

The fraudsters then sent a fellow perpetrator who initially accepted 3,000 euros in front of the senior citizen's home. There was further contact with the fraudsters afterwards, who demanded additional money to pay the deposit due. Mother and daughter therefore made their way to the bank in a taxi that had been ordered by the fraudsters and withdrew another 23,000 euros.

This money was later handed over to the same suspect, who was announced by the fraudsters as a police officer, in the parking lot of a discount store on Devizesstrasse in Waiblingen. He was around 180 cm tall, had a beard, dark blonde hair and was probably driving a small silver car. The fraud was subsequently reported to the police in Backnang by a victim. The Waiblingen police have now taken over the investigation into the incident and are now asking for any relevant information. Passers-by who made similar observations in the discount store parking lot in Waiblingen should call 07361/5800.

Please note the following tips from the police:

  • If you want to protect yourself from telephone fraudsters, then change your telephone book entry, shorten your first name or forego a telephone book entry altogether. This makes it difficult for fraudsters to track you down.
  • The police will never ask you for any amount of money.
  • Do not reveal details about your financial situation over the phone.
  • Don't let yourself be put under pressure on the phone. Just hang up.
  • Never give money to unknown people.
  • If a caller demands money or other valuables from you: Discuss this with family members or other people close to you.
  • If you feel suspicious about a call, contact the police immediately on 110.
