This is shown by a survey conducted by the travel portal Kimpton among 4,000 frequent travelers.
There is a big discrepancy
Overall, the survey shows a large disconnect between travel content currently found on social media and the true desires of consumers, who report that the pressure to be “social media worthy” is negatively impacting their travel experiences. Consumer feedback from the survey also shows a desire for more inclusive social media content from travel brands that suits all personal travel styles and reflects all types of people.
85 percent of travelers surveyed believe travel industry brands' social media content should be more inclusive of all types of travelers, and 84 percent believe travel brands could do more to support a variety of tour operators. 76 percent believe that more realistic travel depictions from content creators on social media would be more valuable than existing travel content.
Many feel excluded
When it comes to demographic factors such as gender, ethnicity, disability, age and height, more than a third of respondents do not feel well represented or are unsure whether they are well represented in the content they see from travel providers ( 34 percent). Almost half of respondents have negative feelings about the current travel industry content seen on social media (46 percent).
A third of respondents believe their travel style or personal needs are not or may not be met by offerings from travel brands, and 21 percent are unsure whether travel content from social media creators is inclusive of different travel styles.
The Kimpton Group responded promptly. “We are committed to working with tour operators who reflect the diversity of the wonderful world around us,” the company said. To achieve this, Kimpton wants to feature more tour operators, guests and models with diversity in ethnicity, religion, language, size, age and disability.
