Have you already discovered the sharepic on Facebook that calls for trees to be watered?

“Water the trees on your street! One bucket a day is enough: so that the trees live! Help with. Keep the city green”

Our request: water with .

Young trees, but also very old trees, require an average of 100 liters of water per day. With the current drought and the lowest rainfall since weather records began, the trees now need our support. Below we explain how you can help with less than 100 liters.

In Bielefeld (yes, there is) people have already become active and are watering the trees on their own initiative because the city's environmental management company and the volunteer fire departments can no longer keep up. At the same time, streams are in danger of drying up and lakes and ponds are in danger of overflowing. The fire brigades provide support with their pumps and try to bring as much oxygen as possible into the waters so that the animals and plants do not die or dry out.

You can tell that the trees are stressed and almost dried out when they start to shed their oldest leaves, a process that actually only happens in autumn when the tree has grown enough young leaves. Trees try to reduce their water requirements and only leave the young leaves behind.

Trees that have just been planted and those that cannot get shade from others and are therefore exposed to the sun all day are particularly at risk. This mainly affects street trees that are planted on small central islands or along entrance and arterial roads - but also the tree opposite your own house.

As you can read on the sign above: Trees provide us with fresh air every day and provide shade, insects and birds are allowed to live in them and without trees in the cityscape it would be even hotter and we would have less fresh air to breathe.

Water trees properly

When watering the tree for the first time, please keep in mind that the soil is already very sealed due to the ongoing drought. If you pour a 10 liter bucket of water onto the ground in a gush, you will notice that the water flows away and nothing penetrates the ground. It is therefore important to first get the soil absorbent again. Some trees have little yellow, corrugated plastic pipes sticking out of them. These are so-called drainage pipes which have minimal holes and go far into the ground. You can pour a lot of water there (20 liters a day and they already help!), the water is gradually released into the ground and reaches the roots directly.

If your tree is one without a drainage pipe, then pour sips onto the ground in small stages, and also start watering at a height of 1.50 m on the trunk. If there are branches, the water can then be absorbed directly there and it will drain more slowly floor down.
First pour 5 liters on it, wait 10 minutes, then the next 5 liters etc.

You can also build your own water storage tanks out of PET bottles if you don't want to constantly go to the tree. To do this, simply drill small holes in the lid or the upper area of the bottle, fill the bottle with water as much as possible and first drill a small hole in the bottom. Then place the bottle upside down in the ground and you have already built your own drainage pipes, which you can also transport across the street in a very practical way.

The more bottles you convert, the more water the tree can get and you won't have to refill them as often.
Maybe you can also mark the tree and let the neighborhood know that you have taken on a “ tree sponsorship ” so that others can learn from your exemplary behavior and perhaps become tree accomplices.
