Yes, there are now reported cases of illness in Germany, but this report was brazenly falsified!

According to a photo from an article in the Tagesschau, there is said to be a coronavirus disease in Kiel.

The original article comes from the Tagesschau, but it reports on a case in Switzerland.
The photo is a fake, created by modifying the site's source code,

An apparent article from the Tagesschau is circulating via cell phone photo in which it is written that an infection with the new coronavirus was confirmed for the first time in Kiel.
However, the report was distorted by an “internet troll”! This is the warning:

The warning currently circulating
The warning currently circulating

“A case of coronavirus infection has been confirmed for the first time in Kiel. As the Kiel UKSH announced, it is a 70-year-old man who lives in Mettenhof and was infected at a meeting in Milan.

That report was apparently falsified specifically to spread local panic in the Kiel area.

The comparison: fake versus original

on the Tagesschau website on February 25, 2020 at 8:23 p.m. Since the URL of the real article can also be seen in the photo, you can easily see it yourself.

Here is a graphical comparison of the items:

Fake versus original
Fake versus original

Both items have the exact same date and time.

The differences again point by point:

  • including Austria and Switzerland ” became “ including Germany Austria and Switzerland ” ( the comma was negligently forgotten )
  • Switzerland ” became “ Kiel
  • As the Swiss Ministry of Health announced ” became “ As the Kiel UKSH announced
  • who lives in Ticino ” became “ who lives in Mettenhof
  • " said the director of the Federal Office of Health Pascal Strupler " became " said the director of the Federal Ministry of Health Jans Spahn " ( grammatical error, name misspelled, also Jens Spahn is Federal Minister of Health, not Director of the Federal Ministry )
  • I am currently in a hospital ” became “ I am currently in a hospital in Kiel

Is the image perhaps an older version of the article?

No. The fact that both the original and the item in the photo both have the exact date and time speaks against this. If it had been changed, the original would have at least a different time, and especially when such serious changes to an article are made, reference is made to them, á la “A previous version of the article said…”.

How was the item faked?

Unfortunately, this is far too easy to do by going to the source code of a page, changing the text there and then taking a photo of the changed article or taking a screenshot.
We demonstrated this in a previous forgery, in which an article from the Tagesschau was also changed .

Conclusion

The article was falsified by changing the source code, probably to spread local uncertainty in Kiel.
However, the fake has grammatical and spelling errors, and the date means it cannot be proven to be an earlier version of the article.
