Donald Trump's Facebook account was suspended on January 7, 2021. The trigger was , among other things, his expression of sympathy and incitement towards his supporters during the storming of the US Capitol and the spread of false reports about voter fraud during the presidential election. Five people were killed in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
At that time, those responsible for the committee decided that a new examination would take place after two years in January 2023. Experts would then check whether the “risk to public safety has decreased.” Financial Times source, the question of whether Trump's Instagram and Facebook accounts will be reactivated will be resolved later this month.
Letter to Mark Zuckerberg
Now the former US President has put pressure on him and wrote a letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg via a lawyer on Tuesday (January 17, 2022), as the AFP news agency reports. It says: "The blocking of President Trump's account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and hindered public discourse." Trump should not be "silenced."
The lawyer Scott Gast also wrote: “Donald J. Trump is a declared candidate for the office of US President. He is the leading contender for the Republican nomination in numerous opinion polls.”
For this reason, Gast is calling for a meeting with the leadership of Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta to discuss the rapid restoration of Donald Trump's user account.
Meta under pressure to make a decision
When asked by Spiegel , Meta said that a decision should be announced “in the coming weeks”. Nick Clegg had already announced on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the decision would be announced soon . He pointed out that Trump's ban had only been imposed for two years.
Clegg also argued in Davos that Meta has an obligation to allow controversial discussions on its platforms. As Vice President, Clegg is officially responsible for the decision at Meta.
Representatives of the US Democrats, on the other hand, explicitly asked Meta this month to extend the ban for Trump because the latter continues to spread positions that are harmful to democracy.
Twitter account activated again since November
In addition to Instagram and Facebook, other platforms also blocked Trump's user accounts on the grounds that there would otherwise be fear of further violence. The short message service Twitter lifted the ban in mid-November, a few weeks after it was taken over by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Nevertheless, as of January 19, 2023, Trump had not published any further tweets , even though his account is active again. Instead, he said he wanted to concentrate on the online platform he founded, Truth Social. Even though he doesn't reach nearly as many people via this platform as he once did via Twitter, the 76-year-old has already announced that he wants to run for president again in 2024.
However, this project has not yet generated the desired momentum: apparently many Republicans want to enter the 2024 presidential race with a different candidate than the highly controversial ex-president.
