It's a little bit of the secret hope for karma that resonates with this sharepic. What if Donald Trump's mother, of all people, immigrated illegally?

The episode is about a sharepic claiming that Mary Anne MacLeod, the mother of President Donald Trump, emigrated illegally to the United States in 1929. This sharepic has gained some popularity due to President Donald Trump's stance on immigration, both during his presidential campaign and in light of executive orders issued in the early days of his presidency.

This sharepic, originally written in English, about the naturalization of his mother, a Scottish immigrant named Mary Anne Macleod, is now also available in a German version:

Fortunately, we no longer need to reinvent the wheel at this point, because our US colleagues at Snopes have carried out a fact check on this.

MacLeod's early life was described on The New Yorker website in June 2016 under the title "Donald Trump's Immigrant Mother" as follows:

Mary Anne MacLeod was born on May 10, 1912. Her father, Malcolm, was a fisherman on the remote island of Lewis, and he and his wife, Mary Smith, raised several children. Her hometown of Tong is still dominated by fishing and increasingly tourism, and many extended MacLeod relatives live in the area.

Passenger lists indicate that Mary Anne's first visit to the United States occurred on December 2, 1929, with the beginning of a longer stay following her arrival on May 17, 1930:

By at least 1933, Macleod had officially declared her intention to live in the United States, as evidenced by the passenger manifest below, which appeared to be a return trip to her parents' home, with the box for "intended country of future residence" as " “foreign” (i.e. outside the UK):

Sometime in the mid-1930s, as reported in The New Yorker article about Mary Anne, she met a young builder named Frederick Trump, whom she married in 1936:

In the 1930s, MacLeod reportedly met Frederick Christ Trump at a dance, and the two fell in love, according to a 2005 profile of the Trump family in Real Estate Weekly, although it is disputed whether she was living in the United States at the time or just visiting was. Fred Trump was a builder who started a construction company while still in school. In the late 1920s he sold single-family homes in Queens for $3,990 each. Fred Trump and Mary MacLeod married in 1936 and settled in Jamaica, Queens, then a haven for Western European immigrants.

The fact that Mary Anne MacLeod was both an immigrant and later a naturalized American is undisputed. There is ample documentation (discussed above, and in countless other passenger lists) that she entered and exited the United States with the required visas several times during the 1930s with no documented problems. Her certificate of naturalization, dated March 10, 1942, issued by New York's Eastern District Court, is behind a paywall . Snopes has provided a photo .

Any ongoing controversy on the subject boils down to a 1940 census that lists Maria as both Frederick Trump's wife and a naturalized citizen, even though she wasn't granted citizenship until 1942. This document (also behind a paywall ), which includes an "X" next to her name indicating that she took the census with her family's information, enters the letters "Na" in the "Naturalization" field. (Compare here and here ).

Conclusion

Although Snopes cannot provide an explanation for the discrepancy, there is no evidence that Mary Anne violated immigration laws before her naturalization in 1942, as she traveled internationally frequently but was able to re-enter the United States afterward. So there is nothing to indicate illegal immigration.
