This is what Trump wrote on the “Truth Social” platform, dated August 8, 2022:
“These are dark times for our nation as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raid and occupation by a large group of FBI agents.
Donald Trump, Truth Social
This has never happened to a President of the United States before. After working with the appropriate government authorities, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate. This is procedural misconduct, the weaponization of the justice system, and an attack by radical left-wing Democrats who absolutely do not want me to run for president in 2024, especially if you look at the recent polls, and who are also doing everything to stop Republicans and conservatives in Parliament […]"
While the FBI was at Mar-A-Lago, the ex-president himself was not at home.
Why did this search take place?
It is still unknown why the ex-president's property was searched. According to media reports, there is a connection with his handling of documents and files from his time in the White House, as the New York Times writes, citing anonymous sources.
After his term in office, Donald Trump is said to have taken several boxes of files from the White House to his property in Florida. In the USA, however, all presidential correspondence must be archived. He then handed over several documents to the National Archives Administration Office. According to CNN , the FBI was supposed to check that nothing was left behind during Monday's search.
Photos are currently spreading on Twitter that supposedly show that Trump even flushed some documents down the toilet, which he rejects.
Investigation ordered by the Ministry of Justice?
The Justice Department is investigating two matters: On the one hand, there are questions about what role Trump played in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and on the other hand, the alleged misuse of documents.
This raises the question of whether Merrick Garland, US Attorney General, could pursue criminal action against the former US President.
