Tension was high when it was announced that the House of Representatives special committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol would hold a public hearing as early as Tuesday, June 28th, although the The next appointment was not scheduled until two weeks later. The reason given was “ recently obtained evidence and witness statements .”
These statements were tough - and don't show Donald Trump in a good light!

The witness

It was not easy for the January 6 Committee to obtain testimony as many people appeared to refuse to testify. The appearance in the current hearing was all the more surprising: none other than Cassidy Hutchinson appeared before the committee and in public with her statements.

Hutchinson was a senior adviser to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. Meadows himself had previously been called before the committee, accepted and then declined, was charged with criminal contempt by Congress and cleared of charges by the Justice Department.

In her position, Hutchinson, who was (or is) an enthusiastic supporter of the Republican Party, enjoyed great trust and was also given highly sensitive information by Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows, which is why her statements are all the more weighty.

Here is a summary of her most important statements to the committee:

Trump didn't want metal detectors

On the morning of January 6, the President was informed that weapons had been confiscated from some of his supporters who were en route to the Capitol. When Trump and his team were on the Ellipse - the large oval lawn on the south side of the White House - he gave the order to his staff to remove the metal detectors.

do n’t give a fuck if they have guns. You're not here to harm me “

Trump is said to have said to his chief of staff.

Trump's biggest concern was that the crowd outside the Capitol wouldn't look big enough on television. That same day, he again encouraged his supporters to march on the Capitol as lawmakers certified Biden's victory. Two days earlier, Chief of Staff Meadows told Hutchinson that “ things could get very, very bad on January 6th .”

Trump wanted to join his supporters in front of the Capitol

Until minutes before the violence escalated at the Capitol, Donald Trump was pushing for him to be taken to the Capitol, according to White House records and various witness statements. This was already known, but Hutchinson's statements further confirmed it.

In fact, National Security Council chat logs first released at the hearing confirmed that the Secret Service was looking for a way to get Trump to the Capitol. Interesting: This contradicts the statements in Meadow's book; In it, the former chief of staff claims that Trump never planned to go to the Capitol.

Trump angrily grabbed the driver's steering wheel

Robert Engel, who was in charge of the Secret Service on Jan. 6, repeatedly told Trump on the drive back to the White House after his speech that it was not safe to drive to the Capitol, according to Tony Ornato, then deputy White House chief of staff to Hutchinson.

According to Hutchinson, Ornato said that Trump became extremely angry: “I'm the damn president! Take me to the Capitol now!” Trump reportedly shouted before leaning forward, grabbing the steering wheel with one hand and trying to choke Robert Engel with the other hand.

Robert Engel and Tony Ornato also testified to the committee behind closed doors, but their testimony was not used at Tuesday's hearing. What is known, however, is that Ornato denies having told Hutchinson about the steering wheel incident.

Anecdote about Trump's mental state: Ketchup on the wall

The committee questioned Hutchinson about Trump's state of mind after the election loss, after which she recounted an anecdote from December 2020:

Accordingly, then-Attorney General William Barr told the Associated Press in December 2020 that there was no evidence of election fraud. Hutchinson heard loud noises in the hallway and then saw the president's servant in the dining room changing the tablecloth. Ketchup dripped down the wall and a porcelain plate lay broken on the floor.

The president was extremely angry about the interview with the attorney general and had thrown his lunch against the wall ,” Hutchinson said. “ I grabbed a towel and started wiping the ketchup off the wall.

“Pence deserved to be hanged”

According to Hutchinson, Trump defended the rioters who called for the execution of then-Vice President Mike Pence on January 6th. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone reportedly told Chief of Staff Meadows, “ Mark, we need to do something more. They are literally demanding that the vice president be hanged .”

“Mark, something has to be done or people will die and the blood will be on your damn hands. This is getting out of control.”

said Pat Cipollone, to which Meadows is said to have simply said, " You heard him, Pat. He thinks Mike [Pence] deserves it." He doesn’t think they’re doing anything wrong .”

Evidence of witness influence

At the end of the hearing, the committee said that it had secured the testimony of some key witnesses from Trump's inner circle and even members of his family, but that there was some sort of obstruction on Trump's part and that the committee had evidence of witness tampering.

As one anonymous witness said: " What they told me is that as long as I'm a team player, they know that I'm on the team, that I'm doing the right thing, that I'm protecting those I have to protect, you know, I will continue to be in good graces in Trump world.

Another unidentified witness said he was told by someone close to Trump that Trump is " thinking about you " and that " he knows you are loyal " and hopes that " you will do the right thing by coming to yours." Question appears ” – sentences that could come from a mafia film.

Conclusion

The committee's new evidence is consistent with a years-long pattern of behavior by Trump, who has repeatedly used private and public channels to pressure who might testify against him. For this reason in particular, the committee thanked Hutchinson profusely for her courage to testify publicly before the committee.

In particular, the Committee takes evidence of witness influence very seriously and will consider next steps, which may include a criminal referral for possible witness influence or obstruction.

In light of the new statements, it has become more doubtful whether Trump can really run for re-election in 2024.
