The booming social media platform TikTok, which is particularly popular among young people, hardly enjoys the trust of its users when it comes to rumored news. This is shown by an international survey by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in Brazil, India, Great Britain and the USA. Only 20 percent of those surveyed trust TikTok news. However, Instagram (24 percent) and Facebook (27 percent) are hardly doing better.
Younger people are more trusting
According to the survey, there are big differences in terms of age: only three percent of people over 55 trust TikTok messages. For those under 35, however, it is around 40 percent. According to the current survey, younger people generally trust social media platforms more. The Reuters authors attribute this to their ability to recognize fake news better than their elders and not to believe it.
Google has a big lead in trust over social media: 52 percent of Brits and 53 percent of Americans trust Google News. The results of the Trust in News Project also show that trust in news is generally declining. In the US, only 49 percent trust the entire news cycle. In Great Britain, 46 percent of survey participants even said they no longer wanted to read the news. A survey of US young people showed that they mostly consume news online, but only reluctantly.
