Actually, the lights should soon go out on Trump's “Truth Social” platform, as the hoped-for financial injection of $1.3 billion is unlikely to come ( we reported ). But as it happens in horror films: the killer, believed to be dead, stands up again!

The former US president's social media app caused an uproar a year ago when it emerged that the site's source code had been shamelessly stolen from a free platform and only the references to the creators had been removed ( we reported ). In August 2022, the “Truth Social” app also received a brake from Google, which did not activate the app due to “inadequate” content moderation guidelines.

Google gives the green light for now

“Truth Social,” which offers a Twitter-like social experience, markets itself as a platform that “ promotes an open, free and honest global conversation ,” which sounds good, but so far it has tended to mean that anything can be said wildly. In February, the app debuted on the Apple App Store before attempting to make it available on the Google Play Store as well.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said it allows apps on the Google Play Store as long as they " adhere to our developer guidelines, including the requirement to effectively moderate user-generated content and remove objectionable posts such as those that incite violence. " . The company adds that Truth Social has agreed to enforce Google's required moderation measures on user-generated content.

Through so-called “sideloading”, i.e. installing the apps from other websites or other stores, the app has already found its way onto some smartphones, but most Android users get their apps from the Playstore and have the “Apps “Accept from third parties” is blocked by default.

Only available in the USA

At least the “global conversation” point is not fulfilled, because “Truth Social” will only be available to Android users in the USA. In this country, searching for the app in the Playstore leads to nothing.

Users of Samsung smartphones were even able to install “Truth Social” from October 4th, as they have adapted Android software and their own app shop.

For Trump's over 4 million followers on "Truth Social" the news is at least a glimmer of hope, but now it remains to be seen how long the platform will last. The QAnon movement and other extremist movements in particular prefer the platform to spread misinformation. It is now unclear to what extent this will change as a result of the required moderation.
