The coronavirus is currently keeping us fact-checkers particularly busy. In particular, we receive frequent inquiries about supposed miracle cures, effective protective measures or chain letters with advice against the virus.
Fact check: Does Turkish perfume really help against the coronavirus? Most of these myths can be debunked relatively easily, but there is currently a post going around on Facebook and WhatsApp that requires a closer look.
This article claims that comparatively few suspected corona cases have occurred in Turkey so far and that this is related to a lemony scented water known as “Kolonya” which is traditionally used among Turks.
What do the facts say?
In fact, according to our research, there are hardly any reported suspected corona cases in Turkey, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that there are extremely many corona cases in Iran and Turkey is a direct neighbor of Iran. However, a direct connection between the use of Turkish cologne and the number of corona cases cannot easily be established, but mind you, this is not completely unreasonable, since Kolonya, similar to Cologne water or 4711, contains a very high alcohol content of over 80% and is therefore in addition to Fragrance has a disinfecting effect, which is also the reason why Turkish scented water is also used by hairdressers as an after shave. [mk_ad] The core statement that Kolonya helps against bacteria, germs and viruses is actually correct. However, as is often the case, it is worth looking at who distributed this information. The article appeared for the first time on Noktara.de , a satirical site comparable to Postillon, which, according to its own slogan, presents with a wink “News from the East, today!”
“In contrast to the rest of the lying press, we at least admit that our reports are fictional and come from the Arabian Nights. However, our news often has a real or current relevance.”
In this case, the real reference consists of the antiseptic effect of the scented water and the comparatively small number of reported suspected corona cases in Turkey, which the satirists exaggeratedly intertwined. By the way, Noktara also published a whole series of satirical articles about the coronavirus. For example, that a hoarder was killed by his purchases , a man suffered a heart attack while reading hysterical Corona headlines should avoid accessing Chinese websites If you enjoy satirical news like this, you can also like Noktara on Facebook and leave a greeting from Mimikama in a comment. Conclusion:
The article should be understood as satire, but not particularly far-fetched, since thorough hand washing and disinfectant actually help prevent illness.
