Twitter boss Elon Musk is abolishing the old blue ticks on April 20th of this year. This date is already known from a number of public activities. This appears to be a reference to an unofficial holiday for cannabis culture. According to Musk's ex-partner, the musician Grimes, he only found out about this a few years ago. On April 20th, the microblogging service wants to take action against corruption and inequality within the existing verification system.

Blue tick becomes a commodity

Unchecking accounts Musk doesn't like also seems to have something to do with malice. This is especially true for editors and publishers who Musk considers to be biased or outspoken critics. In fact, one of the few accounts that lost their blue check mark on April 1st was the New York Times, which Musk described as “propaganda.” The new CEO also described the removal of ticks from old accounts as “glorious”. However, according to experts, they are unlikely to be nearly as problematic as Musk makes them out to be.

This also negates the perceived value that Musk is offering by selling the blue tick for eight dollars. It has long been a kind of status symbol for celebrities. However, anyone can now buy the coveted blue checkmark, making it meaningless in this context. However, there is no serious review. Twitter relies only on the ability of users to pay. Musk believes this will highlight real people within the app.

Twitter Blue only has 600,000 users

This development has so far also been reflected in the figures for the premium service “Twitter Blue”. According to current figures, Twitter currently has around 600,000 paying users here. This corresponds to 0.24 percent of all users. Only around 4.3 percent of account holders with blue checkmarks took action after Musk's first threat. Next week, Twitter will implement its new push algorithm. The only tweets in For You feed recommendations will then come from paying subscribers. However, according to studies, the majority of users never tweet. Musk himself has also admitted this fact. Changes in extensions are therefore likely to be rather meaningless.
