The microblogging service Twitter allows limited cannabis advertising by licensed companies in the USA and parts of Canada. However, the consumption and effects of the drug must not be visible. Underage or pregnant models, celebrities popular with children, and advertising in areas where cannabis is illegal are also prohibited. The drug is illegal in 29 US states.
Expansion of marijuana advertising not ruled out
Advertisers must ensure compliance with the requirements themselves. A license from Health Canada is required for Canadian providers. Twitter has lost half of its top 1,000 advertisers since the fall, Pathmatics reports. The company does not rule out expanding cannabis advertising to other countries, if possible.
Cannabis legality creates more tweets
In the USA alone, Twitter has around 77 million users. In regions where marijuana is legal, there are also more tweets on the topic. Consumption has skyrocketed in recent years. Marijuana is also the most widely used illegal drug in the United States. In 2021, 16 percent of US citizens, 53 million people, used marijuana, a survey by the Statista Research Department shows.
