This is intended to effectively curb spam and abuse in the long term
Short messaging service Twitter wants to buy San Francisco-based technology company Smyte , which offers tools to stop online abuse, harassment and spam and protect user accounts.
With this step, Twitter is taking another stand against cyberbullying and hate speech on the web.
Bring experts on board
Harassment and bullying have particularly affected Twitter in recent months, as online discourse has become increasingly hateful and abusive. The short messaging service has long been trying to combat this problem with new strategies aimed at reducing hate speech, violent threats and harassment on its platform. However, the success so far has not been satisfactory.
Exact details of the now announced purchase are not yet known. Smyte's website is in maintenance mode and announces its acquisition by Twitter. This purchase is Twitter's first acquisition since acquiring startup Yes, Inc. in December 2016.
The people behind Smyte are experts in combating malicious content online. Smyte CEO Pete Hunt previously led Instagram's web team and built Instagram's business analytics products, for example.
Bring out the big guns
Smyte co-founder Julian Tempelsman worked on the spam and anti-abuse team at Gmail and previously on the anti-fraud team at Google Wallet and Google Drive. Another co-founder, Josh Yudaken, was a member of Instagram's core infrastructure team.
For Twitter, the Smyte deal is a clear advantage: The technology can be integrated to monitor and manage abuse reports while targeting bots, scammers and a range of other threats that today's social networks typically face.
