Twitter, has taken a significant step back. The company has withdrawn from an EU agreement aimed at combating online disinformation. Twitter originally committed to taking action against the spread of misinformation and regularly reporting on progress in this area. But Twitter has now announced that it will no longer comply with this obligation.

The EU and the German government react

Twitter's decision caused a stir in the EU and Germany. EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton made it clear that Twitter could not simply hide from its obligations. The EU will continue to insist that Twitter follow certain rules.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser was also disappointed by Twitter's decision. She highlighted the dangers of misinformation and lies and how they can incite hatred and threaten democracy. Faeser promised that German laws apply to all platforms and will be enforced.

Twitter was already in focus beforehand

Twitter's decision is not entirely unexpected. The company has had problems meeting its voluntary obligations in the past. Twitter has been criticized for not providing enough information about what it is doing to combat the spread of misinformation.

The future law: Digital Service Act (DSA)

In the future there will be a new law in the EU called the Digital Service Act (DSA). This law aims to ensure that platforms quickly remove illegal content. Platforms can face heavy penalties if they fail to comply. It remains to be seen how Twitter will respond to these new requirements.

Twitter under new leadership

Since tech billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter, the company has undergone some changes. Musk aims to turn Twitter into a “digital marketplace.” He has already abolished some rules and introduced a new subscription model. Despite the criticism and the new legal requirements, Twitter has yet to comment on its decision.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop. Will Twitter change its strategy to comply with the new laws? Or will the company continue to go its own way? The time will tell.
