Removal after six months without active login – user name available again!

From December 11, 2019, the microblogging service Twitter will delete a number of accounts whose users have not logged in for over six months. According to a “BBC” report, this measure primarily affects deceased users. This is the first time Twitter has removed accounts on such a large scale.

More transparency as a goal

“What happens to social media accounts after the user dies has been a big topic for a long time. However, it is usually more important for the users themselves during their lifetime; relatives are usually not interested in it. There is an option for users to log into services that will manage their account after they die. These services work closely with funeral homes,” says Jörg Bauer, managing director of the Lichtblick funeral home, in an interview with pressetext.

Currently, Twitter only allows deactivating a deceased person's account if a family member requests it and can identify themselves. Also, unlike Facebook, there is no function to freeze the account and block all activities on it to prevent possible misuse. Twitter's deletion action will make it easier to retire an account together with the user.

Follower numbers more credible

According to a Twitter spokeswoman, deleting inactive accounts makes user follower numbers more credible. Before deactivating their account, users receive an email warning them and asking them to log in beforehand. The user names of the deleted accounts become available again after the deletion action.

This measure will have no impact on Twitter's user numbers because the company only measures them in users who log in at least once per day. According to a Twitter report from September 2019, the platform currently has 145 million “monetizable” users, i.e. those who log in every day and come into contact with advertising.
