In the future, every Twitter user should have more control over how their data is used and when it is passed on. This is the aim of the new privacy policy of the microblogging service http://twitter.com/en/privacy . The aim is also to make this policy as simple and accessible as possible. Three areas are used for this: the new data protection policy and a privacy page in more understandable language; the game “Twitter Data Dash” and so-called “privacy icons” for data protection settings and controls.

No more legal jargon

The privacy policy is no longer written in legal jargon, Twitter asserts. There is also a reorganization in the three areas of data collection, data use and data transfer. There is also now an expanded reference to content on Twitter that goes beyond tweets and reflects the increasingly existing rich media. A clearer explanation of how Twitter personalizes the “Twitter Experience” and which ads are shown is provided. The redesigned site also includes direct answers to frequently asked questions, such as data collection and use.

Twitter Data Dash

Twitter Data Dash http://twitterdatadash.com is the new video game that aims to improve data protection in a fun way. It accompanies the user through more complicated areas of the data protection policy, is intended to enable safe navigation in the “Twitterverse” and makes tools discoverable that give the user control over their data. According to Twitter, transparency is the top principle.

Simple privacy icons

The company is currently working on a redesigned iconography for privacy. These are visual icons that represent basic security and privacy settings across the service. Just as the magnifying glass is a well-known symbol for the search function, Twitter wants to make it easier to recognize in general with standardized symbols for privacy settings and controls.
