Clearview is a facial recognition software that is now being used in Ukraine. The software is intended to identify fallen Russian soldiers and then locate their families. This should give them an opportunity to be informed about the loss of a family member.

“Out of courtesy to the mothers”

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov explained this in an interview with Reuters :

“As a courtesy to the mothers of these soldiers, we are disseminating this information on social media so that the families at least know that they have lost their sons and so that they have the opportunity to collect the bodies.”

The Clearview software is used to find social media accounts of dead Russian soldiers. Authorities then send a message to relatives. On the one hand, to provide information about the loss, and on the other hand, to make arrangements for the body to be picked up, Fedorov continued in the interview.

Use of the software is controversial

Opponents of facial recognition, such as civil rights groups, oppose the use of Clearview in Ukraine. They warn of possible false identifications.

Already in 2021, EU activists filed a complaint against the software. The background is how it works, because the software, controlled by artificial intelligence, creates a biometric database for authorities from billions of photos from the Internet. Alan Dahl, data protection lawyer at the Austrian data protection organization noyb, who joined this complaint, expressed concerns about this:

“Just because something is online doesn’t automatically mean it’s fair game for others to acquire in any way they want – that’s neither morally nor legally permissible.”
