The claim

In a news agency's tweet about a war event in Ukraine, the photo shows soldiers with paintball guns.

Our conclusion

The tweet and the accompanying article emphasize that the defense of the Russian attack was done “according to our own statements”, so there is no evidence why an (unfortunately chosen) symbolic photo was used.

The report didn't make it into too many media outlets, and for good reason: it could neither be confirmed nor refuted. According to its own statements, the Ukrainian army repelled a Russian invasion of Sumy on May 16. However, since there appeared to be no photos of the event, a symbolic photo was apparently used on Twitter - of soldiers with paintball guns.

This tweet is:

Ukraine says it has repelled the Russian invasion of the Sumy region ,” the tweet said. There is a link to an article (see HERE ), in which it is reported that the information comes from the Telegram account (see HERE ) of the governor of the Sumy region, Dmytro Zhyvytskyi. However, the authenticity of the account cannot be verified.

But the discussions about the tweet are not about this information, but about the photo used: Many users on Twitter point out that the soldiers carry paintball weapons.

However, there are also some users who did not take the symbolic photo humorously, but saw it as proof that the war in Ukraine did not exist - which, given the facts, is a minority opinion.

Where the photo comes from

Reuters itself explains in an article (see HERE ) that the photo is not from Russia's attack in the Sumy region, but is an archive photo (see HERE ).

The photo used is from April 15, 2022 and is captioned: “ Territorial Defense Force members take part in a training simulation for storming a building occupied by enemy forces in preparation for a new attack amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and although in front of an abandoned building in Sumy “.

Conclusion

The original source of the report, the alleged Telegram channel of the governor of Sumy, did not contain any photos of the attack, which is why a symbolic image of soldiers in Sumy was used in the tweet - unfortunately, however, without labeling this accordingly, which is all the more fatal since the Soldiers with paintball guns can be seen.

However, this is not proof that the Ukraine war did not exist, but rather just a rather unfortunate selection of a symbolic photo.

Also interesting:

According to a newspaper clipping, Olaf Scholz tells “Time” that the opinion of the people should not be taken seriously and that, in the interests of Europe, a war by Germany against Russia would be conceivable.
But in the letter to the editor (!), Scholz's statements were completely twisted and freely interpreted! Wrong quote – No, Olaf Scholz is not considering Germany going to war against Russia!
