More and more TikTok users are using the video platform to report on the current situation in Ukraine. They show their own photos and videos, or reports from other sources. Their common motivation: to show the truth.
Alina: “I show the truth”
Alina ran a travel blog on TikTok under the name “alina__volik” . Now you can read in the profile description that she shows the truth about Ukraine in her posts: “I show the truth about Ukraine in my stories”.
Her video about what she packed in her emergency backpack, how her windows are taped up and how she sleeps fully clothed so that she can quickly escape to a bunker in the event of an air raid has had over 16 million views.
In an email to Reuters , Volik wrote that she wanted to combat misinformation in Russian news that portrays the war in Ukraine as a "military operation."
Valerissh: “How to help Ukraine?”
The “Valerisssh” also changed abruptly with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Her profile description is now “How to help Ukraine?” In her videos, for example, she shows how she made coffee without electricity or used candles to create a homely atmosphere in the air raid shelter.
You realize that the focus is always on the will not to give up and to make the best of everything. In a current video from March 15, 2022, she reports on how she fled Ukraine to Poland. After long train journeys and stopovers, she has now arrived in Warsaw.
Her videos are seen by over 800,000 followers.
Marta: “I show real footage of real people”
Marta Vasyuta stated in an interview with the BBC that many people would not believe "even professional journalists or verified sources" when it came to information about the war in Ukraine.
That's why it's important to her to use her reach as information about the current situation. Marta mostly posts content from other sources and adds music. Her profile description “I show real footage of real people” is already an indication that she sorts out fake reports from the outset. She points out that it is often difficult to check content for truth. Even if a video comes from Ukraine and people speak Ukrainian, videos can still come from the long conflict in the east of the country that began in 2014. She adds that she is not an expert at reviewing videos, she tells the BBC.
In her first video about the Ukraine war, she reports that four soldiers have been killed in the last two days. The video was posted on February 23rd.
Marta believes some people would prefer to get their news from social media sources rather than traditional news outlets.
But experts warn that while TikTok can be a good place to find real videos from where things happened, disinformation is also rampant on the platform.
