New figures from Check Point Research show that attacks have now more than doubled to 112 percent between February and August this year. In Russia, attacks on these areas fell by eight percent because, although Russia has not been completely cut off from the Internet, as has often been said, the government and military are restricting access to their IT environments from outside Russia.
The result: During the conflict, Ukrainian business networks were attacked on average over 1,500 times per week, 25 percent more frequently than before the war. This compares to 1,434 weekly attacks in Russia.
The Russians are focused on a campaign of disruption and destruction, with state and state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups carrying out sophisticated attacks ranging from sabotage of critical infrastructure to espionage. For the first time we have seen coordination between cyber attacks and the military: a Russian missile attack on the television tower in Kiev and a simultaneous cyber attack that was intended to paralyze the city's broadcasting capacity.
What is worrying is Ukraine's willingness to recruit keyboard warriors of all kinds.
Immediately, Ukrainian Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov called on Twitter for “digital talents” to join the new IT army, assigning them tasks through a special channel on the smartphone messaging service Telegram, which attracted hundreds of thousands of members. This creation of a state cyber force is unprecedented, but it may turn out to be a danger in the future, because recruiting anyone (including criminal hackers!) is dangerous.
