In view of Russia's war of annihilation against Ukraine, 61 percent of Germans fear an uncontrollable escalation on the digital level by non-state Ukrainian hackers. This emerges from the new survey conducted by the Berlin digital association BITKOM among 1,002 people.
According to the survey, 56 percent support the activities of hackers during the war in Ukraine. 51 percent believe such attacks could make an important contribution to ending the war more quickly.
“The wars of the future will be fought in a hybrid manner: in digital space as well as in the air, on water or on land. The economy, the state and society must adapt to this new form of warfare.”
BITKOM President Achim Berg
“Need a cyber NATO”
According to the industry representative, it is essential to protect the local economy and critical infrastructure from digital attacks. “Cybersecurity must be thought of holistically for the NATO area and its partners. We need a cyber NATO.” Despite public statements, it is often unclear what goals hacker groups are pursuing.
Accordingly, 52 percent of Germans say they do not trust hacker groups. 49 percent report that attacks from hackers scare them. On the other hand, 42 percent of those surveyed admire the work of such activists, and 33 percent even say they trust them more than government agencies. 38 percent are of the opinion that the war could not be won for Ukraine without the intervention of hackers.
