As the Financial Times reports, Ukrainian hackers have managed to locate a Russian military base near Melitopol, a city in southern Ukraine. To do this, they used the power of images and social media.
A picture is worth a thousand words
The hacker group Hackyourmom has created numerous fake profiles of attractive women and contacted Russian soldiers via Facebook and Telegram. They responded to the request to share photos of themselves as proof that they are actually soldiers. Using the metadata contained in the images, the position of the base could be found. The coordinates were eventually passed on to the Ukrainian military.
It remains unclear whether the hacker group was also involved in spying on the Russian base where an explosion occurred a few weeks ago.
Not the first hack against Russia
According to Hackyourmom, the hacker group was also involved in the leak of the database of Russian companies supplying the military and also had a hand in Russian TV channels broadcasting films about civilian victims in Ukraine.
Shortly after Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine at the end of February 2022, the government called on volunteer hackers to defend the country.
Russia has also activated a cyber army, which, among other things, launched attacks on German wind energy companies in order to reduce the sanctions against Russia.
