With a “dash” you can essentially paralyze users’ news streams in the Facebook app. Of course, this upsets some Facebook users.

For some it is a narrow line, for others it is an infinite graphic: Depending on how you use Facebook, this graphic is displayed differently optimized.

Anyone who opens Facebook with a PC or notebook will see nothing other than a small, narrow line in rainbow colors. So it's rather irrelevant and you could ask yourself what that is supposed to be.

However, the whole magic unfolds as soon as this line appears in the news stream when you use Facebook with the Facebook app. Then the inconspicuous line suddenly becomes an almost endless graphic. You can swipe as much as you want: the graphic that now completely fills the display doesn't seem to want to end.

The following screenshots clarify: On the left you can see the “dash” as it appears in the desktop version. On the right you can see the view from the Facebook app. The same graphic is wide and incredibly long.

Infinite graphics: what happens there

Apparently this is a bug that we can no longer replicate. The graphics are optimized differently depending on the device. On the desktop the graphic is optimized in height, in the app it is optimized for width.

In the source code of the corresponding CSS you will find an indication that this graphic is displayed at 72000%. Now you understand why you see seemingly endless graphics in the app on your smartphone.

The infinite graphics in the wild

If you would like to look at the infinite graphics yourself, you are of course welcome to do so. You can find it on Facebook behind this link . Please be warned: Anyone who shares this picture themselves will of course have to deal with the corresponding reactions of their own friends.
