The background to the negative award ceremony were studies at the Düsseldorf University Hospital, in which dogs' teeth were pulled and holes were drilled in their jaws. The dogs — four beagles about one year old — were killed after the experiments, GEO .
This was dental research, as the university clinic itself explains.

The animals were then killed. The university clinic is now defending itself against the allegations.” As a comment on the picture you can read: “The Initiative Doctors Against Animal Experiments eV gave the Düsseldorf University Hospital the negative award “Heart of Stone” for the “worst animal experiment of 2022.” awarded.
At the university clinic, dogs had their teeth pulled and holes drilled in their jaws.
The animals were then killed. These experiments were not only cruel, but also “completely absurd,” claimed a veterinarian who was part of the initiative.
The university clinic contradicts this:
The aim of dental research is to counteract the deterioration of the jawbone after tooth loss without having to remove bone material from elsewhere.
The experiments have shown that implanted tooth substance transforms into bone substance.”
The research is also reported on the Facebook page of “Doctors Against Animal Experiments” and the critical statement by Dr. Gaby Neumann is also mentioned here.

“Researchers at the Polyclinic for Dental Surgery at the University Hospital of Düsseldorf extracted 10 teeth from Beagle dogs and milled holes in their jaws. In a second operation, two more teeth were extracted and sections of these teeth were inserted into the previously milled holes. In a third operation, titanium implants were screwed into the pieces of tooth that had grown into the jaw. Three weeks later the dogs were killed.”

“Dogs are capable of biting through entire bones or tearing parts out of their prey. Completely different forces are at work here than when it comes to human nutrition. That’s why there are serious differences in the type of teeth and the structure of the jaw, bones and muscles.”
Dr. med. vet. Gaby Neumann, research assistant at Doctors Against Animal Experiments
Statement from the Düsseldorf University Hospital on experiments with dogs
The aim of the research was to find solutions for the loss of jawbone after tooth loss.
In order to rebuild the jawbone, it is necessary to use bone material that is taken from elsewhere. The experiments now showed that the tooth substance was converted into bone substance in the jaw.
The tests were therefore successful and showed the desired result. The university clinic is defending itself against the accusation of absurdity.
All necessary permits were also obtained for the tests in 2017 and 2018. For the experiments, the animals were anesthetized and given painkillers, reports RP Online .
For legal reasons, the dental experiments first had to be carried out on animals. The successes have now been repeated and thus confirmed in a clinical study on humans.
