Unintentional friend requests

In the last few hours, we have received a lot of user reports in which Facebook users expressed their concerns about unwanted and unintentional friend requests. They reported that Facebook automatically sends a friend request to people whose profiles they visit without them actively sending the request. This has led some users to believe that their account may have been hacked.

If you scroll further, it seems as if Facebook thinks that you also want to send a request and the “Add friend” button becomes “Requested”.

We would like to emphasize at this point: There is no reason to panic. Our initial research suggests that no one was hacked. Instead, we assume that this is a possible bug in Facebook's system.

One user even created a video recording where you can see the bug!

Such a bug could occur due to a number of factors, including, but not limited to, changes in Facebook's programming or algorithm, server problems, or unexpected interactions between various features of the platform. We would like to emphasize that although such bugs can be annoying and confusing, they do not usually indicate a security issue.

There has been no information about this from Facebook yet. If this changes, we will update this article.

In the meantime, we recommend that you review privacy settings If you notice unwanted friend requests, you can cancel them manually. If you believe that your account has actually been compromised, immediately change your password and take additional security measures if necessary.
