June 22, 2018 / UPDATE in the Sophia Lösche case

The investigations into the whereabouts of Sophia Lösche and a crime allegedly committed against her have been continued with extreme pressure over the past few days under the leadership of the Leipzig Police Department, with great support from the Bavarian police and the Federal Criminal Police Office as well as the Spanish police and judicial authorities.

As far as the press is currently reporting that the body of an unknown woman was found in Spain, we cannot provide any further information. Since the woman has not yet been identified, the Spanish police and judicial authorities have opened their own investigation into the discovery of the body, about which we are not authorized to provide any information. However, all investigative actions in Spain are carried out in close coordination with the local investigative authorities and extensive investigative actions are also carried out by Spanish officials following requests for legal assistance from the Leipzig public prosecutor's office. The German authorities are supported by Eurojust in this.

Information on the information gained so far by the Spanish authorities can only be provided once it has been officially transmitted here and is therefore available here in court. However, this can sometimes take a few days given the transmission channels required within the framework of international cooperation.

No further information is currently being provided about the person arrested in Spain.

The Leipzig public prosecutor's office is pursuing the extradition of the suspect. Whether this has been approved has not yet been announced through official legal assistance channels. In this respect, we ask for your understanding that no details can be provided until a decision has been made.

Out of consideration for Sophia Lösche's relatives, we ask that you refrain from further speculation about the discovery of a body in Spain and possible injuries to this person.

Upper Franconian authorities are continuing to investigate the Sophia Lösche case

UPPER FRANKEN / LEIPZIG. With immediate effect, the Bayreuth public prosecutor's office and the Bayreuth criminal police have taken over the investigation in connection with the disappearance of 28-year-old Sophia Lösche from Leipzig, as evidence of a possible crime scene in Upper Franconia has now increased. An ongoing investigation is currently underway to determine whether a female body found yesterday in Spain was the missing person.

On June 14, 2018, the Amberg native wanted to hitchhike from Leipzig to Nuremberg and from there continue to Amberg. That evening she got into a truck with Moroccan registration at a gas station near Schkeuditz for a ride. Since then there has been no contact with the 28-year-old. As a result, the Leipzig police also searched for the woman through the media.

Measures on Bavarian territory

As part of the Leipzig Police Department's investigation, the Upper Franconia Police Headquarters coordinated the necessary measures in Bavaria. In particular, the affected Bavarian departments carried out extensive investigation and search measures with numerous emergency services at relevant locations such as rest areas or motorway parking lots along the truck's known route. The Bavarian investigative services transmitted their findings to the responsible Leipzig police department.

Arrest and body found in Spain

Last Tuesday, a 41-year-old driver who was traveling to Morocco was arrested south of Madrid on the basis of an arrest warrant. His truck had recently burned out some distance away. According to previous findings, the 28-year-old got into this truck in Schkeuditz. The man is strongly suspected of having killed the woman. There was initially no trace of the body. A female body was found in northern Spain on Thursday. The location of the discovery coincides with the suspect's route. In order to identify the remains, a DNA profile of the missing people is now being created and sent to the Spanish authorities.

Taking over the investigation

Based on the findings so far, in particular the GPS data from the arrested man's truck, it must be assumed that the woman was killed in Upper Franconia. Based on this criminal assessment, the Bayreuth public prosecutor's office has now taken over the investigation from the Leipzig public prosecutor's office. She is conducting the investigations in collaboration with an investigative group of around 15 people at the Bayreuth criminal police. In this context, Bayreuth investigators will work with the authorities in Leipzig and adopt the previous results. They will also be present in Spain. Contact with the Spanish authorities exists via a liaison officer from the Federal Criminal Police Office and, on the judicial side, via the European Union's judicial cooperation unit “Eurojust”. As the investigation continues, the Bayreuth public prosecutor's office will continue the legal assistance proceedings from Leipzig and, if necessary, make additional requests to the Spanish authorities. Experience has shown that these can take some time.
