This is shown by a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in the course of a survey of American teenagers aged 13 to 17.
YouTube reaches top spot
67 percent of respondents use the Chinese-based platform, and 16 percent use it almost always. Compared to the survey in 2014/15, the proportion of young people who use Facebook fell from 71 percent back then to 32 percent today. However, YouTube is at the top with 95 percent. This is followed by TikTok as well as Instagram and Snapchat, both of which are used by around 60 percent of teenagers. This is followed by Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit and Tumblr.
The changes in the social media landscape since 2014-15 go beyond the rise of TikTok and the decline of Facebook. More and more teenagers say they are more likely to use Instagram and Snapchat since then. Conversely, Twitter and Tumblr recorded declining shares. And two of the platforms Pew covered in the earlier survey – Vine and Google+ – are now long gone.
Demographic differences
The survey also shows some demographic differences in teens' social media choices. For example, boys are more likely than girls to say they use YouTube, Twitch, and Reddit, while girls are more likely to use TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Additionally, the proportions of Black and Hispanic teens who use TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp are higher than white teens.
Pew also analyzed the frequency with which teens engage on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. 35 percent say they use at least one of them “almost constantly.” A quarter of teens who use Snapchat or TikTok say they use these apps almost constantly. A fifth of young YouTube users also say this. Looking at teenagers overall, 19 percent say they use YouTube almost constantly, 16 percent say this about TikTok, and 15 percent say this about Snapchat.
55 percent of teens think the amount of time they spend on social media is just right. 36 percent think they waste too much time on it, and only eight percent say they use social media too rarely. 97 percent of teenagers use the Internet every day. In 2014/15 it was 92 percent. Since then, the proportion of young people who are constantly online has almost doubled - from 24 to 46 percent.
