So far, Bing has had a hard time asserting itself against the overwhelming competition from Google. But with the integration of ChatGPT, that could soon change. The search engine developed by Microsoft should benefit enormously from artificial intelligence and therefore represent an even better alternative to Google searches.

In February 2023, Microsoft announced that it would integrate the smart chatbot ChatGPT into its Bing search and the Edge browser. Initially the function could only be used by selected people, but it is now available to all users. With ChatGPT as an “AI co-pilot on the web,” the Bing experience becomes a whole new search experience.

A new era of search: Bing with ChatGPT

The new Bing with ChatGPT is currently only available via the Edge browser on a PC or laptop or via the Bing app on a smartphone (Android and iPhone). Users receive a chatbot that runs on the latest version GPT-4. Until now you could use ChatGPT for free, but the current version GPT-4 requires a paid subscription called ChatGPT Plus. The Bing version is specifically optimized for ChatGPT to ensure a better search experience.

As soon as you open Bing in the browser or app, you are greeted by a pop-up that offers the opportunity to try out the “new Bing”. Registration is required for this, which is why a Microsoft account is required. In some cases it may be necessary to sign up to a waiting list with an email address, but access is usually activated immediately. This step can also be omitted entirely.

As soon as you have registered, you can already use Bing with ChatGPT. The chatbot is already integrated directly into the Edge browser and is located in the top right corner of the window as a speech bubble with a small “b”. Clicking on it opens a chat window that makes searching easier by interacting with ChatGPT. In the app, however, the symbol for the chatbot is prominently placed in the middle of the bottom bar, making navigation easy.

Bing chatbot: What you should know about the settings and how it works

When used for the first time, the chatbot in the browser asks whether you would like to allow it access to the browser's web content. This allows the chatbot to provide answers to web pages, select text for editing assistance, create page summaries, and use other functions. This setting can be changed at any time later, even if you denied it at the beginning. It is important to note that a conversation is limited to 20 questions and after that a new conversation must be started.

Although, according to Microsoft, the Bing bot is up to date with the latest data, it still has difficulties with current events. The chatbot is not yet able to fully understand complex events or messages and provide the correct answers to them. Nevertheless, it turns out that ChatGPT can already provide helpful answers to many everyday search queries.

How the Bing bot scores in the chat thanks to Dall-E images

With an additional function you can generate images directly in the chat - thanks to the integration of Dall-E. Even though the commands currently have to be entered in English, the results are better than with the original Dall-E.

In an attempt to recreate the "Balenciaga Pope," the results look promising, except for a distorted face. Dall-E intentionally distorts the face to prevent deepfakes.

However, it is no problem for the AI ​​to generate a photorealistic image of a snail on a schnitzel. The image generator is currently only available in the browser version of Bing; the function is still a long time coming in the app.

Experiments with advertising in continuous text

Microsoft is already testing the integration of advertisements directly into the running text in the Bing app. The advertisements are marked as such (“Ad”) and, depending on the search query, one or another advertisement may be displayed in this regard. There are currently no advertisements in the browser version, but this could change in the future.
