Against the background of impending energy shortages in winter and rising prices for natural gas, the environmental organizations BUND, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), Germanwatch, Greenpeace, NABU, WWF and the environmental umbrella organization German Nature Conservation Ring (DNR) have today clearly spoken out against the increased use of fan heaters. In a joint paper, the organizations point out that mass heating with fan heaters can lead to local power outages, driving up electricity prices further and exacerbating the resource problem.
Fears of a cold winter make fan heaters seem like a good alternative to many people, but the opposite is the case, the associations warn. “If numerous households use fan heaters at the same time, this can lead to local overloading of the power grid. There is a risk of local power outages because the many fan heaters do not have to be registered with the network operator. Unlike large consumers, network operators cannot take them off the network.”
The organizations also warn of skyrocketing electricity costs, because heating living spaces with fan heaters is expensive. The increased use of fan heaters would spiral up the price of electricity even further. Consumers would then have to pay for supposed cost savings on gas with significantly higher electricity bills.
The organizations therefore call for prudence. “Private households will still be supplied with gas even if the supply situation in Germany deteriorates. Because certain consumer groups are protected by law, even if the federal government declares the emergency level – the highest of three warning levels,” says the joint paper.
At the same time, environmental organizations point out more effective alternatives. Energy consumption as a whole must be reduced - not just in private households, but especially in industry. The organizations are also calling on the federal government to significantly increase its efforts in the energy transition, not least in order to end dependence on fossil fuels more quickly.
