At the moment, it seems that the new minimum age (16 years) is the big topic regarding WhatsApp.

This passage can be found in the updated WhatsApp Terms of Use and Privacy Policy:

But we think there is a passage in the updated WhatsApp Terms of Use and Privacy Policy that should give us pause. We even think that this passage actually makes it impossible to use. It is about the following passage/statement, which can be found under the heading: “About our services”:

Directory. In accordance with applicable laws, you will regularly provide us with the phone numbers of WhatsApp users and other contacts in your mobile phone address book, including both the numbers of users of our Services and those of your other contacts.

We believe that you are behaving unlawfully if you use WhatsApp on your smartphone unless you obtain consent from every single contact in your address book that you can pass on all contact details to WhatsApp.

Delete WhatsApp!?

It gets tricky: you actually have to remove WhatsApp from your cell phone immediately, because none of us are authorized to pass on phone numbers from our own contact list, whether to WhatsApp or anyone else.

One may question whether this is practical, but none of us are officially telephone directory providers! It's basically a data protection violation because you can't make decisions over the heads of your saved contacts.

So if you don't want your phone number to be shared by friends who use WhatsApp, you actually only have one option: you would have to ask your friends to stop using WhatsApp. Is that possible?
