Photos of Venice's canals and an unusual sight are currently circulating on various social media. The water is crystal clear and you can even see fish in some pictures. The reason often cited is the absence of ships and tourists due to the coronavirus. Is that correct?

First of all: Venice is one of the tourist hotspots on the planet. (before the outbreak of the coronavirus and the associated closure of the lagoon city) Around 30 million tourists visit the city on the Adriatic every year, although only 50,000 people live in it. Although Venice has tried to control the crowds of tourists in recent years with entrance fees and stricter rules, this has not diminished interest in the city in the sea.

The biggest point of criticism was the monster-like cruise ships, which, being several stories high and weighing hundreds of thousands of tons, seriously threatened the fauna and flora of the lagoon city. In addition, the visitors only left the ship for a few hours, but had no realistic economic value for the city.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus and the lockdown of the lagoon city, Venice has been extinct. In St. Mark's Square, the epicenter of the tourist city, there are only a few locals and pigeons left. Economically, the crisis is a catastrophe for the local residents, as Venice finances itself primarily through tourist income.

The “human” break is good for the water and its inhabitants.

Due to the lack of shipping traffic, less ground sediments such as sand are now being stirred up, which means that the quality of the water increases and it is now even possible to see down to the bottom of the canals. Less pollution and wastewater mean that fish and various water birds return to the lagoon city.

Summarized:

The images posted are not fake and some large traditional media outlets such as CNN also became aware of the phenomenon. However, reference must be made to various images here. The pictures posted are from Burano, a town next to Venice, as a user on Twitter has already confirmed:

Venice's canals in their current state can, however, be viewed in other pictures, such as in the Facebook group Venezia Pulita (Clean Venice). Marco Capovilla, among others, posted numerous impressions of Venice there!

Venice's canals are a clear example of how quickly nature can recover after the absence of human influence. Without sand, sewage and other dirt thrown up, the water returns to an astonishing quality that should serve as a reminder of the influence our mass tourism has on various areas of the world.
