Did you know that a family of four releases between six and twelve liters of water into the air every day through breathing and sweating? consumer advice center in Berlin found this out. That's why it's extremely important to ventilate interior spaces regularly and heat the rooms to at least 16 degrees.

What happens if we don't ventilate?

Aside from the fact that our concentration and performance decrease significantly in stuffy, stale air, there is another important reason why regular air exchange is so important. If the humidity in the interior is too high, undesirable mold can quickly appear in the living area at low temperatures.

How can we avoid mold?

Heating:
Right now we live in constant fear that the heating costs could get beyond us. Many people therefore try to severely restrict heating behavior. In general, this idea of reduction is not a bad one. And yet it is important to consider a few important points when saving. This includes consumer advice centers pointing out that it is absolutely important not to let the room temperature fall below 16 degrees. Below 16 degrees, mold can develop very quickly indoors.

Heat continuously or turn down the heating? Martin Brandis from the energy advisory team at the Federal Association's consumer advice center explains: "Heating through heating is a significantly more consumption-intensive measure." It is therefore better to turn down the heating if there is no one in the living space during the day or if the rooms are not used at night. Nevertheless, the interior rooms should have at least 16 degrees.

Ventilation:
Regular shock or cross ventilation is essential for good air exchange. One or more windows should be completely opened for several minutes to allow air to be exchanged. The length of time required for ventilation depends on several factors.

  • What is the current humidity? The best way to determine this is to use a hygrometer. You can get these for just a few euros in e.g. B. Buy hardware stores. They provide information about how high the humidity is indoors. This will help you determine whether you should open your windows or not. It is important to open the windows completely, as tilted windows are usually not enough.
  • If the humidity is too high and cannot be reduced despite ventilation, it may be necessary to tilt the windows for a while.
  • If the windows are left tilted for too long, the window area can cool down and condensation can form. This would promote mold growth.
  • If you are not in your apartment during the day, it is enough to open the windows in all rooms extensively in the morning and evening.
  • Pay particular attention to plenty of ventilation after cooking, baking, ironing, showering or when drying wet laundry in the apartment.

Why should the windows be opened even in rainy weather and fog?

At first glance, it seems strange to ventilate in rainy weather or heavy fog, because we actually want to get rid of humidity and not attract additional moisture into our living spaces. However, even in humid weather it is necessary to change the air regularly. Why? The experts at aktuell-lüften.eu explain:

“If you let the moist rain air in from outside when ventilating and then warm it up with the room heater, you will still get drier air than you currently find in your living space. Before ventilation, the indoor air is often so stale and enriched with moisture that ventilation makes sense even in rainy weather and has a positive effect on air quality.”

Heating and regular air exchange go hand in hand. It is important to let fresh air into our cozy four walls and then warm this fresh air to at least 16 degrees using a heater. It is important to turn off the heating when opening the windows. However, care should be taken to turn it back on afterwards.
