This emerges from the federal situation report “Counterfeit Money Crime 2021”, which was published by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Accordingly, the number of counterfeit money crimes registered by the police fell to 38,234 cases in 2021 (2020: 45,883, -16.7%).
To sell counterfeit money, perpetrators use social networks and messenger services, but also relevant trading platforms and forums on the Darknet. In addition to counterfeit banknotes, they also offer manufacturing equipment, printing templates and instructions.
A total of 123,300 counterfeit euro notes were registered in Germany last year, a decrease of 12.2 percent compared to the previous year. Banknotes with supposed values of 10, 20 and 50 euros make up almost three quarters of all counterfeit notes registered in Germany.
If you think you have counterfeit money in your wallet, you can check suspicious banknotes yourself.
Three points should be taken into account.
- FEEL
Firstly, feel: How grippy and firm is the paper? For example, does it feel too easy? - LOOK
In the second step, you should look closely at the banknote - pay particular attention to the watermark, the portrait hologram and the security thread. - TIPPING
Last but not least, the bill should be tilted in order to notice the color changes that are incorporated into the banknotes, for example on the written number, which is therefore also known as the emerald number.
Reusing counterfeit money is a punishable offense.
The police assume that all counterfeit banknotes currently in circulation can be identified using this testing scheme. Anyone who recognizes a counterfeit banknote should hand it in to the nearest police station - to help identify suspects, but also to avoid becoming a perpetrator themselves. Because continuing to use counterfeit money is a punishable offense in Germany.
