A security hole in the video call function in WhatsApp allows hackers to take over the smartphone.

“Project Zero”, a team of hackers commissioned by Google, discovered and documented the security hole . Accordingly, it is possible for hackers to install spy software on the smartphone using a simple video call, i.e. a call via WhatsApp with video transmission.

As Heise reports , the security gap lies in the memory management of so-called video conferencing. Video files are transferred using “RTP packets” (Real Time Protocol). The security gap makes it possible to mess up the memory management using a specially prepared RTP packet in such a way that the sender of the video call can install their own code, for example a Trojan or other spy software, onto the device.

In the documented example of “Project Zero”, this gap is only used harmlessly: the smartphone’s operating system crashes.

How can I protect myself from this?

WhatsApp is aware of the vulnerability and this security gap has also been closed latest version But there are still billions of users who haven't updated their WhatsApp!

The latest versions:
Android: 2.18.302
iOS: 2.18.93

You can find your version number in WhatsApp in Settings -> Help -> App Info .

The current version may vary depending on the device.
If your WhatsApp does not have the current version and cannot be updated yet, we recommend not accepting video calls. downloading and updating the current version directly from the homepage
