The claim

A video shows a man escaping with two children from a room shaken by an earthquake. It is claimed to have been recorded in Türkiye in 2023.

Our conclusion

The claim is false: the video was not made in Turkey in 2023, but during an earthquake in Alaska in 2018.

The devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023 has resulted in around 20,000 deaths and more than 66,000 injuries so far. Video and images online show the effects of the disaster on the affected populations in Turkey and Syria. However, some of these contributions are not from the currently affected region and are out of date, but they still have a wide reach.

One such example is a TikTok video titled “earthquake Turkey,” which has been viewed over 6.4 million times and shared thousands of times. It shows a man fleeing with two children from a room that is shaken by an earthquake. But the video is not current. The picture was not taken during the current earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border, but in Alaska in 2018.

Fact check: Video shows an escape during an earthquake

Using reverse image search, a still image from the TikTok video, we found an article from 2018 in the Finnish tabloid Iltalehti.

This article shares an extended excerpt from the same video and reports that an exceptionally strong earthquake struck Alaska on November 30, 2018. The furnishings of the living space, the people, their clothing and the sequence of their escape in the video are identical to the video that was shared on TikTok.

Conclusion: The video published on TikTok is not related to the current earthquake in Turkey and Syria in 2023, but was from 2018 and was recorded in Alaska.
