A video is currently circulating that is supposed to show the “birthplace of the coronavirus” in Wuhan. The video comes from a market in Indonesia.

Video from Markt shows “Birthplace of the Coronavirus” – The most important thing to start with:

  1. A video on Facebook shows a market where exotic animals as well as dogs and cats are sold. The market is said to be located in Wuhan and is said to be the “birthplace of the coronavirus”.
  2. This is false information: The video comes from Indonesia and shows the traditional market in Langowan.

It's about the following video, which is currently being shared on Facebook:

Birthplace of corona virus. Wuhan market

Folks make up your own mind. Coronavirus

The fact check

This is false information. The video does not show a market in Wuhan, China.

It is the “Traditional Market Langowan” in Langowan – not to be confused with the Chinese Langwan. While Langwan, Beibei, Chongqing in China is located about 1 hour by flight west of Wuhan, Hubei, China, Langowan is 19.5 hours by flight south of Wuhan, namely in Indonesia.

So here we see a bazaar in Langowan , Sulawesi Utara Province, Minahasa Governorate, Indonesia. Anyone who googles the term “Langowan Market” will quickly notice that there are several media reports about this market. Among other things, also requested videos on YouTube . ( Note: Be careful, the content of this video may be disturbing. )

It quickly becomes clear that the version on Facebook was cut because the first four seconds with the title “Pasar EXTREME Langowan”, which translates roughly to “Market Langowan EXTREME”, are missing. The description goes on to say “The most extreme food in the world only at Langowan Market”.

At around second 20 you can see a sign that translates as follows:

Government of Minahasa Regency
Commercial Department
Langowan Market Office

Conclusion:

The video does not the birthplace of the coronavirus, as claimed on Facebook. It shows the traditional Langowan market in Indonesia, which is actually extremely strange to us Europeans (to put it bluntly, of course it doesn't apply to all people in Europe).

The missing 4 seconds in the Facebook version obscure the location of the recording. So the market shown could really be anywhere in the world.
