According to a survey by the Youth Endowment Fund, 14 percent of British teenagers have been victims of violence in the past 12 months. For the report “Children, violence and vulnerability 2022”, 2025 children and young people aged 13 to 17 were surveyed.
- 39 percent of young people were victims or witnesses of violence.
- 55 percent of young people say they have seen real acts of violence on social media.
- 24 percent say they saw children carrying or using weapons.
Stayed away from school out of fear
65 percent of young people say they have changed their behavior in the past year to protect themselves from violence.
14 percent stayed away from school out of fear. Another 14 percent say they lost concentration because of worry. 16 percent avoided going to a social event. And two percent even say that their fear led them to carry a weapon.
26 percent would like to see changes in policing, such as more patrols to combat violence, as well as more youth clubs and activities (15 percent) and drug and alcohol counseling (ten percent).
When they asked children and young people about their experiences of violence, the interviewers used the following formulation:
“By violent crime we mean the use of violence or the threat of violence against another person or persons, for example hitting someone, threatening someone with a weapon or attacking someone. This includes sexual assault, where someone intentionally touches someone in a sexual way without their consent.”
Five percent of young people said they had been victims of sexual assault in the past twelve months - and for girls it was even eight percent. Five percent had been threatened with a weapon or attacked.
