We're talking about vivipary - premature, live germination or, translated, "live birth" on or in the mother plant.
The Facebook page “Avantgardens” posted a post with amazing photos:
How can this happen?
Each seed contains a hormone that stops it from germinating to avoid sprouting under poor conditions. However, sometimes plants produce too little or none of this enzyme or the environmental conditions are simply misinterpreted. Then the small seeds begin to germinate, even though they are still on the mother plant. This can occur when ripe fruit is left unprocessed for too long in warm and humid temperatures or when rain collects in the axils of ears.
The phenomenon of vivipary often occurs on tomatoes, peppers and pumpkins, but this natural wonder can also be discovered on sunflowers. While the seedlings of tomatoes appear very small and worm-like, they are often strong and robust in peppers.

Can you still eat this?
The quality of the fruit is not affected by vivipary, premature germination. However, the seedlings should be removed as they often contain the mildly toxic substance solanine, which can cause gastrointestinal problems if consumed.
Of course, you can also plant the small plants straight away and, with a little patience, you can soon harvest new fruits.
