Create a living will tailored to your personal needs quickly and conveniently from home - this has been possible since November last year with the consumer centers' online living will. At the request of many users of this tool, the consumer advice centers are now offering an online power of attorney and care directive in the “Self-determined” series.

New online service

This new online service from the consumer advice centers can be accessed free of charge at www.verbraucherzentrale.de/selbstdetermined . The basis for this new service from the consumer advice centers are the forms developed by the Federal Ministry of Justice.

With the help of the new consumer advice center service, consumers can now interactively and step by step put together either a power of attorney or a care directive.

Explanatory texts and tips help you understand the implications of your own decision. In the end, users receive individualized documents tailored to their needs. In order for these to be valid, they must be printed out and signed.

“In our consultations and lectures, we repeatedly notice that there is great interest in advance directives. However, many consumers are afraid of doing something wrong and often stop halfway. Our wish is that the online power of attorney breaks down hurdles and enables consumers to make this important provision.”

Manuel Döbele, health expert at the Baden-Württemberg Consumer Center

Background: Maintain control

A power of attorney or a care directive are important documents in the event that you want someone specific to take care of the most important matters if you are no longer able to do so yourself. If you don't take precautions here, you risk having a stranger appointed as guardian by the court. To take precautions here, there are two options:

A power of attorney can be used to regulate who can make which important decisions if you can no longer make them yourself.
A guardianship order can specify which person should be appointed as guardian by the guardianship court. Guardians are also controlled by the court.
