The fact check

Note: Update to our article from February 28, 2020. A source for the article is now available.

We first reported this incident on February 28, 2020. ( see here )

The death occurred in December 2019. Volkswagen confirmed this in part in response to a request from Regional today . The case gained media notoriety through an excerpt from a newspaper article with the headline “Boundlessly irreverent” that was distributed on Facebook and Twitter. The report was written anonymously and tells of a 59-year-old colleague who died of heart failure during the night shift on December 10, 2019 at the VW plant in Wolfsburg.

The colleagues apparently had to continue working for two hours next to the body, which was around 10 meters away and hidden behind material boxes and covered with a tarpaulin. The website action ./. the corresponding issue of the company newspaper Vorwärtsgang is available as a PDF . The article can be viewed on page 8 here.

According to Regional Today, a spokesman for Volkswagen explains that the body was not hidden behind material boxes, but rather was used to create a privacy screen using factory security vehicles from the beginning of the resuscitation attempts until it was removed by the undertaker. The newspaper is also known, but it is not an employee newspaper, but an information sheet from the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD). However, at the request of Regional today, the MLPD also distanced itself from the newspaper, but did not rule out the possibility that party members could also contribute to the newspaper, which is also well-known there.

An official statement from Volkswagen is still pending.

Conclusion:

Yes, in December 2019 a VW employee died during his shift.

The report on the incident was written anonymously and appeared in a company newspaper called Vorwärtsgang. Volkswagen itself and the MLPD distance themselves from the paper.
